Its still there though not nearly as common as it used to be. If I started playing EvE now I probably wouldn't have stayed due to this. However being able to fly other ships I can do other ways of yarr now.
You still find the occasional retriever, hulk, or BC ratting. But its very uncommon.
I'm actually feeling kinda lucky I got the belt fights I got in my video. Some days I cruised about for hours without finding anything, other days I found 3 BC same day in belts.

And most often not an isk efficient alternative, cause when you loose that HAC (you always loose ships at some point be it lag, DC; or blob) you probably haven't earned that much isk in loot and ransoms in the same time frame.

It hasn't got much to do with the topic, just come and think about it reading Izzy Lizzy's post.
I once warped to a belt with a nub rifter in it. (Im in thorax)
I killed it,
then in warps a new nub rifter,
so I kill it,
then in warps a nub thrasher
and I kill that one to.
Then in comes a fairly noobish rupture and I engage it,
I'm winning
but in warp another pirate rupture and a pirate jaguar, they lock me and 3 of them kill me.
as far as I know just the jag and 2nd ruppy were together (flashfresh and jubes), all others were there just by chance.
So sometimes it can get pretty crowded in belts aswell
